/Connecticut News Articles/ - HOUSTON, TX, June 12, 2008 - When Andrea White is not working hard making sure that kids are reading, she's writing books for them. Window Boy (Bright Sky Press April 2008), is a story about a young boy in a wheelchair who has Winston Churchill as an imaginary best friend. Set in 1968, this touching novel tells the story of Sam Davis, a young man with cerebral palsy that peers though his bedroom window every day at the school he longs to attend. With great determination and the help of both his caretaker and his imaginary friend, Winston Churchill, Sam not only succeeds in gaining admittance to the school and the acceptance of his peers, but also fulfills his dream of becoming the school's basketball coach. The narrative, full of poignant insights into attitudes towards people with disabilities, provides a glimpse into the life of Winston Churchill, who is a key inspiration for young Sam.

Community activist, education advocate and award winning author, Andrea White, is a founding member of the board of Houston A+ Challenge, an organization that supports public school reform by providing teachers, principals, and administrators with resources and coaching to improve classroom and district practices. Since its inception, Houston A+ Challenge has raised nearly $90 million to invest in schools across Houston-area school districts.

Andrea also is a founding board member of Expectation Graduation, an organization dedicated to keeping all kids in school until they get their degrees. An important part of that initiative is the annual "Reach out to Dropouts," when Andrea joins over 1,000 Houston volunteers on a Saturday morning to knock on doors and encourage kids to return to school. Expectation Graduation also has pioneered the use of virtual mentors for at-risk students.

Andrea White is a recipient of the Golden Spur Award for "Best Young Adult Texas Author" for her first book for pre-teens, Surviving Antarctica: Reality TV 2083, published in 2006. Her third book, a coming of age story set against the Chernobyl nuclear explosion, is set for release in 2009. Andrea is also a wife, mother of three, good friend to many, and as Houston's First Lady, considers her role as a truly unique and wonderful volunteer job.
