Connecticut BBB issues alert about mygallons.com
"Gas redemption" firm receives an "F" rating from BBB
/Connecticut News Articles/ - Wallingford, CT, July 12, 2008 - Connecticut Better Business Bureau is warning consumers about a website, www.mygallons.com, that claims consumers can buy prepaid discount cards at locked-in gasoline prices, even if the cost of gas continues to rise.
The Florida-based company which operates the website has been given an "F" rating for "a material omission of fact."
The company offers consumers a gas-redemption program for between $29.95 to $39.95 and claims its card is accepted by more than 95 percent of filling stations in the United States.
Aside from that unsupported claim, the biggest problem at the moment is that mygallons.com is missing a key element: It has no vendor to process transactions on the website. This is a significant red flag because the basic transaction system does not exist.
According to CT BBB President Paulette Hotton, the "F" rating is akin to receiving a failing grade in school.
"Consumers are particularly vulnerable with rising gasoline prices. This company has barely been in business for three months, and although there have been no complaints filed against it, my.gallons.com is engaged in a number of practices the public should be aware of.
As of July 10, 2008, mygallons.com posted a notice stating "The new (gas station) location finder will be available as soon as we announce our new payment network. MyGallons Card will continue to be accepted at virtually all gas stations in the United States. "
On its website, mygallons.com founder Steve Verona admits "We are currently negotiating with several competing payment networks to secure a new payment processor and deliver your MyGallons service with very little delay." In the meantime no such agreement exists.
Mygallons.com is not a BBB accredited business. The company's practices are not considered to be a "scam," however Better Business Bureau has "serious concerns.
