Teens: Puzzled About Finding a Job? Local Company Offers Unique Opportunity to Earn on Own Time
Jobs are hard to find. Stratford-based jigsaw puzzle manufacturer Village Works Enterprises LLC is looking to increase teens' prospects by giving them a chance to earn money at their own pace using their own unique talents while helping to spread the word about the 3-year-old company.
/Connecticut News Articles/ - STRATFORD, CT, August 10, 2008 - "American teenagers looking for summer jobs are facing the worst prospects in five years as retailers and restaurants trim payrolls in response to a slowing economy," according to a recent Bloomberg.com article. Stratford-based jigsaw puzzle manufacturer Village Works Enterprises LLC is looking to increase teens' prospects by giving them a chance to earn money at their own pace using their own unique talents while helping to spread the word about the 3-year-old company.
"We are called "Village" for reasons just like this," said Monica Dennis, the company's president and creative director. "We started this company in response to the needs of a local literacy program. We use the artwork of not necessarily well-known artists that may do incredible work but may not have the resources to market themselves. The Village concept is it takes a village - or community - to raise a child, but you have to take that to the next level and help inspire that child, even employ that child when you can."
Village Works Enterprises LLC makes greeting-card jigsaw puzzles, using all original artwork. They also do customized puzzles of varying shapes and sizes. "Whatever you can imagine, we can make for you," Dennis said. It's the uniqueness of the product that has grabbed the attention of individuals, businesses and organizations alike. The greeting cards, in particular, were used in a recent fundraiser for the Junior Class of Central High School in Bridgeport. "My business partner and I saw the hustle and sales made by some of the teens and were very impressed," Dennis said. Her partner, Ramona Bristow Berry, had the idea to let the teens become the salesmen they needed. "This way we help them while they help us," Bristow Berry said.
The partners decided to create a teen sales program. The company is hoping the teens will be enticed by the idea of setting their own hours, setting their own pace and not needing experience. "We know teens want to show they can handle themselves and yet they still need the security and guidance of home. We require parent or guardian's permission for them to come on board and we are selective. Part of what we will ask is for them to tell us their sales plan for the puzzles. In a way, we are offering the teens a mini business course from which they can make a profit - if they apply themselves."
