SimWelderTM chosen by the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction to augment Career-Technical (vocational) training

EAST HARTFORD, CT, August 02, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (ODRC) is the second prison system to add virtual reality welding to its training curriculum with the recent purchase of 10 portable SimWelderTM turn-key Virtual Reality Welding Trainers. In December 2007, the California Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (CDRC) purchased 20 SimWelder units to enhance the vocational programs offered to inmates.

The ODRC selected both GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) and SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) training capabilities for the units. The GMAW module simulates welding on mild steel and aluminum tee welds in the flat (1F), horizontal (2F), vertical (3F) and overhead (4F) position. For SMAW, SimWelder records the trainee's performance on mild steel tee welds in the flat (1F), horizontal (2F), vertical (3F) and overhead (4F) position and groove butt welds in the flat (1G), horizontal (2G) and vertical (3G) position.

With its specially designed travel case, the portable SimWelder can be rolled through a standard doorway. A single portable SimWelder travel case measures 26" x 24" x 50" and weighs approximately 275 pounds when fully loaded with all of the hardware and software for a single complete turn-key system.

Initially the 10 portable SimWelders will be divided among 4 different ODRC facilities (Grafton, Marion, Lancaster and Chillicothe). Since ODRC selected portable SimWelders, they have the flexibility to offer virtual reality welding training to inmates in their other 22 institutions. The training and installation for the 10 SimWelder ODRC units took place in early July. Over 12,000 ODRC inmates have successfully completed Career-Technical (vocational) trades training. Welding training is just one of the offerings that contribute to inmates finding jobs upon their release.
