NORWALK, CT, September 21, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Monday Night Football Betting action heats up this week with an AFC showdown when the Miami Dolphins host the Indianapolis Colts. Miami returns home after losing inside the Georgia Dome in their opener 19-7. The Dolphins offense just could not get rolling against the Falcons being held to just 259 yards of total offense. In fact, their lone score of the ball game did not arrive until 5 minutes to go in the 4th quarter. As for the visiting Indianapolis Colts, they were in a low scoring game themselves. Indianapolis took down Jacksonville in a low scoring 14-12 battle. Peyton Manning threw for 300 yards, but just could not get into the end zone as much as they would have liked. These two teams' offenses are led by the passing game on offense which usually leads to high scoring affairs. However, this Monday Night's game may actually come down to defense as opposed to offense.
Most teams around the NFL would be focusing on their secondary when a guy by the name of Peyton Manning comes to town, but the Dolphins have a very strong secondary. Sure, they gave up 213 yards to Matt Ryan and the Falcons last week, but they also only allowed 281 for the game. Joey Porter is a big playmaker up front that can wreak havoc in the backfield. Porter recorded the 2nd most sacks in the NFL last season racking up 17.5 in total for the season. Also, having Jason Taylor back on the other side of the defensive line should make them very solid for the year. Considering how the Colts still do not have a running game, if the Dolphins are to lose the game it will be the secondary that lets the team down. The Dolphins signed safety Gibril Wilson and drafted Vontae Davis to help improve a pass defense that ranked 25th in the NFL last season. Having Wilson at free safety along with Yeremiah Bell at the strong safety spot, the pass defense should actually be among the better units in the AFC
Still, the offense will rely on quarterback Chad Pennington. Pennington threw 21 for 29 and 176 yards last week while throwing both a pick and a touchdown. However, must like the Colts offense the rushing game was missing in action having just 96 yards as a team. The Colts defense lacks the ability to stop the run which would be a good area of attack for the Dolphins. Tailbacks Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams will have every opportunity to make things happen. Like the Miami defense, the Colts secondary is stout meaning Pennington will have his work cut out for him. However, if they can establish some movement on the ground then it will really keep the defense on their heels.
Of course the Colts are in similar need for the running game to help aid the offense. However, most may have given up on their ability to move the ball on the ground. The Colts only week in and week out way of moving the ball relies on the arm of Peyton Manning. There is some doubt that Manning would not be as productive this year losing WR Marvin Harrison. However if last week was any indication, Manning will be fine. One reason is the WR Reggie Wayne appears to be ready to pick up the slack. Wayne at times appeared to be the only receiver on the field last week against Jacksonville. Wayne caught 10 balls for 162 yards and a touchdown. If Wayne and Manning can stay hooked up this year, rest assured the offense will still be every bit productive as they have in year's past.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Colts defensive front needs the most work. They have players in the secondary which was apparent last week holding the Jaguars to 114 yards in the air. However, the ground game also gave up 114 yards on the ground. The rush defense may be some concern as the season progresses, but against Miami this week it should not be the biggest of concerns. The Colts defense just needs to get some pressure on Pennington. The Colts defense managed just 30 sacks in 2008 and was only able to bring down Garrard once last week. They simply need to get in the backfield more and they can not afford to allow Pennington time to sit in the pocket. The Dolphins receiving core lacks any big playmakers and the Colts should have the secondary to keep the air attack ground for the most part. However, if they still do not get any pressure up front Pennington can make them pay.
Football Pick - Colts passing game beats Dolphins passing game. Take Colts -3
