Store-A-Tooth ... Could A Baby Tooth One Day Save A Child's Life?
LEXINGTON, MA, December 24, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The first successful human medical trial using stem cells from teeth was recently conducted by scientists at The Second University of Naples, Italy. The group, led by Dr. Gianpaolo Papaccio, successfully used stem cells taken from dental pulp found in teeth to create new bone tissue and graft it onto a human jaw. The success yields a vast number of medical possibilities for dental stem cells, and for those people who store them for future use.
This is excellent news for Store-A-Tooth, a service allowing families to preserve the stem cells found in baby teeth and wisdom teeth - a way to ensure access to genetically matched stem cells for your child. Store-A-Tooth services are brought to you by Provia Laboratories, Inc., who has assembled a team of expert partners to provide you with access to advanced medical services.
Dr. Paul Sharpe, Director of Research at the Dental Institute, King's College London and Scientific Advisor for Provia Laboratories, thinks the importance of this study was the first use of a patient's own dental stem cells. Dr. Sharpe states "Cells extracted and grown from tooth pulp are known to be able to promote bone formation in animals. In this first human study cells from a patient's teeth suffering jaw bone loss were grown and processed in the laboratory and then transplanted back into the same patient's jaw. Increased bone formation was observed with grafted cells than without cells. In principal a similar procedure could be carried out with cells already stored in a dental pulp cell bio-bank."
There are currently dozens of treatments in the clinic or being investigated for adult stem cells - ranging from treatments of leukemia to cardiovascular disease to osteoporosis. While there are currently no FDA-approved applications using dental stem cells, since these stem cells were discovered relatively recently, this study paves the way for a variety of clinical applications on the horizon. Scientists anticipate the earliest applications will be for the repair of damaged tooth structures, bone regeneration, and perhaps ultimately also for the treatment of neural tissue injury or neurodegenerative diseases. Dental stem cells may also be useful for close relatives of the donor such as grandparents, parents, uncles, and siblings.
By using Store-A-Tooth, the patient and/or their family may be able to enjoy future medical or dental benefits afforded by dental stem cells. In the short time since their discovery, dental stem cells have been shown to be powerful stem cells that can differentiate into a variety of cell types such as bone, cartilage, neurons, and muscle.
